Ayurveda Summarized

Ayurveda is a form of comprehensive, holistic natural medicine that focuses on lifestyle and prevention, with disease management through a holistic approach. It is a 5,000 year old “science of life” from India. “Ayur” means “life” and “Veda” means “science”. Many consider it to be the original medicine practice. In the U.S., it is seen as an alternative and complementary medicine.

Interestingly, Dignity Health Care, World Health Organization and many other health organizations recognize Ayurveda as a natural and whole health care system. Because of chronic illness, rising healthcare costs and lack of personalized medical attention in todays health care system, we are seeing greatly increasing rates of preventable disease. In addition, we are experiencing alarming threats to the health of the planet and its ability to support human life. Ayurveda offers proven, holistic solutions to these problems.

Auyrveda’s ultimate goal is to educate and empower you to live your life to your fullest potential.

The Doshas

According to Ayurveda, someones tendencies are governed by Doshas, which are energy principals.

The Doshas arise from the concepts of five elements – space/either, air, fire, water and earth. Furthermore, these five elements are classified into three Doshas, or Tridoshas, which are Vata, Kapha and Pitta. Additionally, the individual Prakriti (a persons’s tendencies and constitution) consists of a predominance of one or more of these three Doshas.

Food is considered medicine in the Ayurvedic practice. Herbs, spices and food selection helps balance the Doshas (which are biochemical energies) and assists in detoxification and digestion. Most importantly, this ancient science prevents the imbalances that contribute to disease because healing starts from within. For example, when a person’s Agni (digestive fire) and Dhatus (tissues) are in balance and removal of malas (waste) is regular, then the person is considered healthy in spirit, peaceful mind and sharpened senses.

Ayurvedic Health Counselor

A Certified Ayurvedic Health Counselor is a professional that applies traditional Ayurvedic medical science principles and practices for prevention of disease and maximization of well-being through diet and lifestyle. It is highly customized and adaptable. The Ayurvedic Health Counselor will come to understand the client’s Emotional, Physical and Mental state. The ancient Ayurvedic texts provide clear guidelines to assess the unique constitution of an individual and how to detect an imbalance. Additional factors of time such as time of day, age and other surrounding conditions inform the imbalance and the resolution.

Your personalized plan may include massage, herbs and specialized eating plans, aromatherapy, and exercise. This plan will offer ways to bring your energy, body and mind back into balance. For example, if one element is too high in the body’s system, counter-elements can be added to restore balance in a natural way without side effects. This approach targets the elemental root cause of disease and illness.

The Bigger Ayurvedic Picture

As “the science of life”, it is a vast collection of knowledge for everything in the cosmos. In other words, this science understands the overall principles of matter, energy, and the relationships therein. Thus, the management of health with Ayurveda is seen as a subset of this science of everything. Intuition and logic are both applied, as they are both components of this knowledge.
